A year of following my curiosities
Are you a jackhammer or a hummingbird?
Many people say that to live your best life, you should find something that you are passionate about. Or work on something you are passionate about. That is all very well and good for those who already know what their passion is. But what about for the rest of us who are not as clear on what they want to do with their life? At times I have to admit that I do wonder if there is something more to this life.
This year, I decide to do just that. Follow my curiosities. I mean, what better year but 2020, a new decade, a fresh start, a clean slate, or whatever you want to call it. And because I want to be bolder and braver, why not blog about it as well? Who knows, I might find myself actually following through with some of my interests through being accountable. And if I inspire other people along the way, that’s all the more reason to go forward. So, are you a hummingbird like me? If you are and you also ask yourself what is it you want to do, then let’s go on this new adventure together and see where our curiosities lead us.
A while back, I saw a video with Elizabeth Gilbert (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_PSUskgiZU) talking about this topic. She said there are two types of people in the world, jackhammers and hummingbirds. This is the first time I’ve heard of people being classified in this way, so I listened on. Jackhammers are people who, you put passion in their hands and they pursue it with singleminded focus, never looking up. Then there are the hummingbirds, who flit from tree to tree or flower to flower, exploring, and go on to create in wonderfully rich and complex ways. The part that I liked best is her advice not to try and find your passion. But instead follow your curiosities, because it may just lead you to your passion.
